Across the Universe Review

Tonight, I checked out Julie Taymor’s latest film, the Beatles infused ‘Across the Universe.’ While I like the Beatles, and I respect their place in music, actually own a few vinyls, and visited Strawberry Fields in Central Park when I was in the City, I had no definite expectations for this film. Granted, I typically like musicals (‘RENT’head here….) so I at least expected to be entertained.
Immediately, the movie sweeps you into song with the main character, Jude (Jim Sturgess,) who pulls you into his story as he sings on the beach. He ventures to the United States in the sixties, from his native England. On his journey, he meets Max (Joe Anderson, who should definitely play Kurt Cobain in a movie,) his sister, Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood,) and a whole cast of colorful characters. There are unexpected appearances from Bono (yes, U2’s Bono,) Eddie Izzard, and even Salma Hayek. The movie is a very colorful (sometimes acid-trippish meets ‘Alice and Wonderland’) trip for the eyes. While there were a lot of stories going on, and that was a bit distracting, the overall feel of the movie wasn’t lost. I actually left the theater liking the movie, though I admit I wasn’t sure I would in the beginning. I will say it seems a bit long, so if you go, don’t go when you’re tired, if you do, you won’t enjoy it.
If you like the Beatles, Julie Taymor’s work, the sixties, or if you’re just curious, check it out. Oh, and yes, the characters can actually sing, quite well, so it’s not hard on the ears.
Overall rating: Three out of five stars.

LOL Tiff–I was actually hoping we could go see this movie together or something when I come see you in November. I guess I should’ve mentioned that *before* the fact though…oops.
Glad it’s worth it though. Last time I checked, it wasn’t actually on at theaters here.

The style reminds me of Baz Luhrmann.

Haha Lacey. It wouldn’t be at the movies still in November. But it was good. Britt even liked it, which surprised me.
