This morning American Idol 7 co-winner David Archuleta debuted his first single, “Crush” on Z100. So what’s the verdict on this mid tempo pop song? It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it will definitely be going on to my ipod. This is exactly the kind of thing I’m into right now, melodic with a strong baseline, kind of like “No Air” and “Bleeding Love”, and based on how those songs did things are looking up for Archie! I’m really surprised that this song isn’t WAY cheesier *coughTattoocough*, I expected total bubble gum but it’s a good mix of R&B/pop, so the songwriters did a perfect job of blending Archie’s sounds. Love the falsetto on the chorus too, that was a nice touch. Listen for yourself:

Crush by David Archuleta Lyrics

I hung up the phone tonight, something happened for the first time, deep inside
It was a rush, what a rush
Cause the possibility that you would ever feel the same way about me
It’s just too much, just too much
Why do I keep running from the truth, all I ever think about is you
You got me hypnotized, so mesmerized, and I just got to know

Do you ever think, when you’re all alone, all that we can be, where this thing can go
Am I crazy or falling in love, is it really just another crush
Do you catch a breath, when I look at you, are you holding back, like the way I do
Cause I’m tryin’, tryin’ to walk away
But I know this crush ain’t goin’ away, goin’ away

Has it ever crossed your mind when we’re hanging, spending time girl, are we just friends
Is there more, is there more
See, it’s just a chance we’ve gotta take, cause I believe that we can make this into something that will last, last forever, forever

Why do I keep running from the truth, all I ever think about is you
You got me hypnotized, so mesmerized, all I just got to know

Do you ever think, when you’re all alone, all that we can be, where this thing can go
Am I crazy or falling in love, is it really just another crush
Do you catch a breath, when I look at you, are you holding back, like the way I do
Cause I’m tryin’, tryin’ to walk away
But I know this crush ain’t goin’ away, goin’ away

And to all the people who said he couldn’t be CURRENT, and that he could only pull off old fashioned sappy ballads….now you can feel as stupid as you look :)

Do you even know what you are listening to in David Archuleta’s new song “Crush”? It is only the beginning of something this world has never seen. His forthcoming CD will be awesome and it will no doubt contain something for everyone because that is the breath of his audience. Do you know how many 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 year olds are on to this guy? And that is not counting the younger teens and tweens who will grow up with this maturing work of art. Yes, “work of art”. He is going global and if Jive gets a clue they will recognize this now before some of the other record companies figure it out. Still doubting, just wait and see. This is as much about David’s singing ability as it is about what he represents. And what he represents, “Now that is the question?” Isn’t it?

Great post and I totally agree! I love how the haters are eating crow now after saying David couldn’t sing anything but ballads. He’s proving them wrong with something current, catchy and very radio friendly!

    Love it, great post!

Nice song to listen to. Shows his versatility. Would love if he includes ballads like “Goodbye” by David Forster and lyrics by Linda Thompson in his Album and a love song or 2 by Air Supply which appealed to many 20’s to 40’s as seen in the type of audience who attended their recent concerts in Asia.

This poor kid. He’s certainly been chewed up over the past months, just for being himself. Is this purely an American habit? Anyway….I’m mostly a rock fan and I think “Crush” ROCKS. Totally top-down-on-the-open-road-with-the-radio-blastin’ kind of song! Considering how fast these Idols have to come up with a first record Team Archuleta did a great job!

David has delivered an amazing first single to his fans, and the public. It is rhythmic, David’s superior vocals soar and are identifiable throughout, has a catchy beat.. Hey-> I watched lotsa American Bandstand back in the day
His older fans like me find themselves humming along unconsciously, and the verses transport the listener back to those bygone days of school girl and schoolboy CRUSHES… It has an appeal across a very broad spectrum of listeners, and should effectively silence the detractors and critics who didn’t believe he had mainstream appeal. CRUSH is the catapult for David to continue his growth and evolution as an artist - I ANTICIPATE MANY MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING MUSIC FROM HIM. TAKE A BOW DAVID… YOU’VE ARRIVED.
