Despite her claim that she doesn’t believe in religion, Gwyneth Paltrow has announced that she plans to raise her children as Jewish.
Us Weekly reports that Paltrow revealed this plan on a recent appearance on NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? An expert on the show informed her that since religion passes through the matriarchal line, she would not be considered Jewish. Her father, Bruce Paltrow, was Jewish but her mother, Blythe Danner, is a Christian. Gwyneth’s husband Chris Martin also comes from a Christian background. Still, they plan to raise 7-year-old Apple and 5-year-old Moses in a Jewish environment. The expert on the show said she might be doing this just to follow traditions she did as a child.
This announcement contradicts what Gwyneth has said about religion in the past. Just last year, she stated that she believes “religion is the cause of all the problems in the world.” She was raised both Jewish and Christian, which she admits was a good way to grow up. However, she insists she does not believe in religion, only in spirituality.
