Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez says she tried to appear as grounded and normal as possible for the fans who look up to her: “I never really said I want to be a role model. But then when it happened I was so down for it. I’m human, I’m not perfect. I make mistakes all the time, but I guess my job is to keep those mistakes to myself, which I’m already fine doing and just try to be the best I can be for those kids.”

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is happy to be a role model, as long as she isn’t idolized: “If you look at me as a role model I agree with it. If you look at me as an idol, I don’t agree. An idol for me is someone that you want to replicate. You want to be them. I don’t wish that on anyone, to lose what they have personally, because that’s when your spark goes.”

Lea Michele

Glee star Lea Michele believes she makes a good role model because she has nothing to hide and she is also proud of the way she grew up: “I’m really proud [to be a role model]. I don’t have any skeletons in my closet and I don’t feel like I’m pretending to be someone that I’m not. Yes, I work really hard and I’m determined like Rachel but I’m also a really happy, easy-going person. Plus, I’m proud of the choices I made growing up and want to show young girls that you don’t have to do what all the cool kids do in order to turn out OK in the real world.”

Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga knows that when your in the public eye, you are a role model even if you don’t want to be. Luckily, she is happy to be one: “When you’re in the public eye, you’re a role model whether you want to be or not. And I want to be.”

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato wants to be a role model so she can prevent eating disorders. The Disney star recently ended up in rehab after suffering from an eating disorder and other problems, and now that she’s back on her feet, she wants to prevent what happened to her happening to anyone else: “There was nobody out there for me to look at and say maybe this is unhealthy. I want to be that for a 13-year old girl at home deciding whether or not to eat dinner, or an 18-year-old girl deciding whether or not to keep her breakfast down.”

Taylor Momsen

Unlike many other stars, Taylor Momsen doesn’t want to be a role model because of the pressure: “I don’t want to consider myself to be a role model, that’s too much pressure for anyone to take on. I didn’t get into this industry to become a role model. I got into it very young and because I love music I still have that drive. I’m not happy if I’m not making music, it’s a simple as that.”
