Chad Michael Murray
Chad Michael Murray says he had a hard time fitting in at school which led to problems: “I had my two front teeth knocked out by a sixth grader in first grade. He picked me up and jacked me in the mouth. My house got egged, and all that stuff that happens to you when you’re growing up with people who don’t understand what’s going on.. I hated high school, to be honest. I enjoyed the educational part of it; my teachers allowed me to be creative. But I didn’t have any friends, because I didn’t fit in.. I thought past high school to what I wanted to do.”
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift also found school hard, but she discovered that writing songs about her experiences helped her through the rough times: “The one thing I had to hold on to was that I could go home afterwards and write a song about it, If someone hurts you and you write a song about it, and that song is going to be played on the radio and everywhere… well that’s about the best revenge you can possibly imagine.”
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez had a close friend who helped her though her bullying experience: “I was bullied every second of every day in elementary and middle school. Obviously, people are going to bring you down because of your drive, it’s nice that you have a best friend to go through this with. I had a best friend to go through that with and it really helped me ignore negative things I was hearing,”
Rosario Dawson
Rosario Dawson was picked on for being a late bloomer: “Growing up, a lot of the girls in my school started developing quickly. My mom has a very pronounced bust line and I was a late bloomer. One of my worst memories is getting all dressed up for a school activity and having the girls pick on me because I was flat chested. I was very much a tomboy for a long time.”
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga was bullied over her appearance but hopes she can help others feel less alone through her music: “School bullies called me fat and laughed at my appearance. I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair and I was overweight. I got made fun of. In 20 years, I hope people will say Lady Gaga changed my life, and her music gave me an identity when I didn’t belong.”
Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato says that she will always remember the hurtful things which were said to her: “People say sticks and stones may break your bones, but names can never hurt you, but that’s not true, words can hurt. They hurt me. Things were said to me that I still haven’t forgotten. It honestly amazes me how schools refuse to take action in verbal abuse… they SAY they do, but this [is] what ends up happening. So, so sad, I can’t explain what I went through when I left public school to start homeschooling… One day I will. But right now… Just know what you say to someone can effect them for the rest of their life.”
