5 Celebs Who’ve Gone Gluten-Free

Forget carbs, lately gluten is the diet evil to avoid by going gluten-free where possible and ditching pastas, breads, and everything else delicious – er, sort of. Be it for health reasons or just to help drop some weight, getting rid of gluten is the way to go, especially if your a Hollywood star hoping to trim down a few inches. Although some have passed off the diet as another fad similar to Atkins, others believe it has real health benefits for the digestive system and just like any diet, cutting calories can help lose weight, so perhaps it works. Here are some celebrities who’ve given the diet a whirl, with varying results and motivations.

Fran Drescher

Fran found the diet made her feel much better: “It was tough going, I wasn’t able to knock off that kind of weight in years. I just decided that I wasn’t feeling well… and I went to a bunch of doctors, and everybody had different prescriptions for all my symptoms and I just decided, ‘No more, I’m gonna do alternative. I’m gonna to switch up my act, eat differently, clean up my act.’ And so I cut out alcohol… so that went, and I became gluten-free and vegan.”

Miley Cyrus

Miley somewhat controversially promoted the diet on her twitter after debuting a new slimmer figure recently: “For everyone calling me anorexic, I have a gluten and lactose allergy. It’s not about weight – it’s about health. Gluten is crap anyway! Everyone should try no gluten for a week! The change in your skin, physical and mental health is amazing. You won’t go back!”

Malin Akerman

After she discovered she had an autoimmune condition, she found skipping gluten helpful: “About two years ago I learned I had an autoimmune condition that doesn’t allow me to eat gluten, so if I have any bread or pasta, it’s going to be gluten-free. I believe in eating as nutritiously as I can all the time… My mother raised me on fresh – rather than processed – foods, and that’s how I eat on a regular basis. (But) I can’t live without chocolate… I also love a thick steak and French fries. I try not to eat them more than once a week, but if they somehow landed on the table in front of me, I won’t hold back. You’ve got to allow yourself the things you enjoy or you’ll just be miserable.”

Lady Gaga

A source close to Gaga revealed that she tried the diet out: ”Gaga has decided to go on a major body blitz and cut out all gluten and wheat from her diet, which is very hard to do. She has given her people strict Instruction to advise staff at venues and restaurants about her new diet because she is taking it very seriously. Her aim is to drop 10lb in a month. She allows herself one potato or rice portion a week and has been snacking on Ginnybake cakes from wholefood shops – they are gluten free cookies.”

Julia Roberts

Julia’s friend introduced her to the diet and she’s stuck to it: ”I do try to eat well and have a balanced amount of the good stuff. I guess it’s about water and things that are green. My girlfriend advised trying a gluten-free diet as an experiment. She said, ‘If I go through your pantry and replace everything that you have with a gluten-free version, will you just try it?’ And I said yes. Now I feel good – I’m getting there!”
