We all have our own personal demons – the voice that might leak out negative thoughts every once and a while – and these 5 stars all say they often struggle with low self-esteem issues. Low self-esteem doesn’t have to be just about appearances, many of these stars say they often don’t feel confident or interesting enough for others. One of these celebrities admits to regularly hearing that negative voice that puts her down all of the time, while another star struggles to accept her body and her esteem is often so low that she can’t even be around mirrors.
Angelina says it’s a struggle she regularly faces because she often believes she has lots of things wrong with herself: “I struggle with low self-esteem all the time. I have so much wrong with me, it’s unbelievable.”
Christina’s low self-esteem is all about looks – she can’t stand seeing herself: “For years, I hated myself. I covered the mirrors in my house. I literally couldn’t have a mirror in my room. I still can’t sit in a restaurant or someplace where I can catch my reflection. I get so paranoid.”
Emma says she has a voice in her head which often puts her down: “I have a fantastically loud and mostly punitive voice in my head that says, ‘You’re not good enough, you stink.’ The voice has to do with morals, not with achievement. The voice is all to do with whether you’re a good person or not.”
Mariah says low self-esteem has always been an issue for her throughout her entire life: “I have had very low self-esteem my whole life. When I was 12 or 13, I remember walking up the driveway, and this guy who was 20 – which may have been highly inappropriate – said to me, ‘I like your pants,’ and I was like ‘Oh, that looks good? Oh, OK, I will wear tight pants now.”
Victoria never believes that people are interested in her and often feels the need to prove herself: ”When I was on stage with the Spice Girls, I thought people were there to see the other four and not me. And when I go out with David and people take pictures, I think, ‘They’re here to take David’s picture.’ It was never my intention to prove anybody wrong. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I don’t have to work, I need to work.”
