It’s tough growing up, but for these stars, it was even tougher! Before these celebrities made it big, they were bullied – some were called names, while other say that their houses were egged, that they were beaten up, while others were threatened. Tom Cruise, who struggled with dyslexia as a young boy, claims to have been bullied at 15 different schools, while stars such as Mischa Barton says she was taunted for not being cool enough, and not fitting in: “I just wasn’t part of the popular clique, I was on the outside of it and that was when I was the most self-conscious… I didn’t dress cool enough, and I didn’t have enough money.”

Just a note here about Clay Aiken. The story of his being bullied is quite well known. Largely because of his memoir he wrote which was released in 2004. “Learn to Sing, Hearing the Music in Your Life” described Clay’s youth and gave a pretty good account of how he was treated. The great thing about the book, and the reason he wrote it, is to show how to handle the situation, and to improve your life in spite of it.
The book was a huge seller, spent 11 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, opening at Number Two. A couple of years later Clay appeared on Dr. Phil to discuss the book and speak with some kids who were having bullying problems. I don’t even know if the book is ‘purchasable’ these days, but may well be in libraries most anywhere. Great lessens therein.
