Ex Idols Cover Popular Songs

Posted by Kim on July 2nd, 2009

Daughtry covering “Poker Face”.  Random, right? I still maintain that he’s the worst thing in music right now, but this cover is actually….good. And that scares me.   (click if it doesn’t embed).

And no less random, is Michael Johns’ version of “Single Ladies”.  Yup, you read that right.  Not as great quality, but once again, in a weird, way it kinda works!

SYTYCD? 5: Top 14 Recap

Posted by Kim on July 2nd, 2009

Fourteen dancers, seven routines, and two hours.  This is gonna get interesting.  But judging by the spoilers though, it’s due to be a good show!

Jeanette & Brandon
Cha Cha by Jean Marc
These two are on fiyah!  Now Jeanette is expected to do well in this style, but Brandon? Wow, his technique and footwork were impressive.  Nigel said it was the best cha-cha he’d seen on the show.  Eh, I’m still partial to Heidi & Ryan’s, but whatever.  Mia changed her mind on Brandon, is anyone surprised?  Same story arch they used for Danny.

Karla & Kupono
Jazz by Sonia
I loved the theme for this routine; Kayla was a new vampire, and Kupono was supposed to be helping her come to the dark side.  Cool!  This is one of those moments were every element pretty much comes together.  Great choreo, I love all the unique moves Sonia comes up with, great music, and the dancers did sooo well playing the characters.  And that’s the key.  I still don’t think they’re some super couple to rave about though.  Mia said this was Sonia’s best routine; eh,  “In The Garden” was better.  She also compared Kupono to Mark which is just….no.  No.  NO.

Evan & Randi
Broadway by Jenny Dowling

Yay for someone else choreographing broadway, even if that choreographer seemed a bit obnoxious.  This style of broadway was definitely different than what Tyce does, it’s soooo nice to see something less cheesy on the show.  There were moments of it that I liked, but it seemed to drag a bit in the middle, and that’s never a good thing.  Mia said the choreography was good but they didn’t dance it quite well enough, and probably for the first time this season, I agree with that (because usually it’s the choreographers who screw stuff up).  The judges were dissapointed in Evan, considering it was his style and all.

Jason & Caitlin
Pop Jazz by Brian Freidman

I think this stole the title away from the fox routine for the weirdest ever on the show.  But Brian hasn’t done a dance so far that I didn’t like!  I’m a sucker for any routine with a story line, especially quirky ones like this and not just some sappy love routine where one of them walks away at the end.    But I’m still a bit confused…so she was trying to impregnate HIM??  Is mpreg suddenly infiltrating mainstream media? (and if you don’t know what mpreg is, consider yourself lucky) Nigel and Mia liked the routine, but it was too weird for Mary.  Uh, okay, she should’ve just judged the routine based on how well they danced it.

Phillip & Jeanine
Hip Hop by Napoleon and Tabitha

Yeah, they got hip hop the first week.  Ridiculous, but whatever.  So, I can’t help but laugh at the fact that predictably literal choreographers used chains for “Love Lockdown”. Nice.  I liked the idea at first, it sounded promising, (and here comes a potentially unpopular opinion) but I thought the first half especially was pretty clumsy.  I didn’t care for the way they utilized the chain, and how they were gripping it and what not.  But towards the end, when they stopped focusing on it, and did all those moves where they were dipping each other and entangled and what not, that was pretty darn cool.   Mia also said it was a bit sloppy, but she and all the judges liked it.

Melissa & Ade
Pas De Duex by Thordel Christensen

Well, obviously they’re the only couple who could’ve pulled this off.  I kind of find pas de duex boring, but I love that we’re finally seeing classical ballet on the show, and gosh, I could watch ballerina’s on pointe all day long.  So pretty. But really, it’s awesomethat they can mix up classical styles with hip hop and jazz, not to mention exposing a new audience to it.  Two favorite moments from the routine, the lift and the part where he was carrying her and she moved her leg (yeah, I have nooo idea what the technical terms are for these).  The judges, of course, raved over it.

Special announcement…Nigel, Carrie Ann Inaba, Adam Shankman and Katie Holmes are setting up the Dizzy Feet foundation which is going to aid underprivileged dancers.  Nice!  It’s kind of like their own version of Idol Gives Back.

Karla & Vitolio
Quickstep by Jean Marc

Let me just say something.  We always rave about the contemporary/jazz choreographers on this show, like Wade, Mia, Sonia etc., but Jean Marc does NOT get enough love.  I mean, sure,  we’ve seen the whole reanimation thing done a thousand times on this show, but I love the fact that he puts a storyline into his routine, while most of the ballroom choreographers don’t.   Wow, Vitolio’s technique was niiiiice.  And I’m glad I finally understand how a quick change is done!  I definitely enjoyed the routine but they’ll probably still end up in the bottom.

Rank

  1. Melissa & Ade
  2. Karla & Kupono
  3. Jeanette & Brandon
  4. Jason & Caitlin
  5. Karla & Vitolio
  6. Phillip & Jeanine
  7. Evan & Randi

Gooood show tonight!  Definitely better than the last couple of weeks.

Predictions
Bottom 3:  Evan & Randi, Karla & Vitolio, Jason & Caitlin
Will Go: Vitolio & Karla, idk…

The “will go” category is tough this week.  I do want Caitlin gone, but she did a good job this week, and so did Karla.  Evan and Randy were the worst this week in my opinion, and I wouldnt mind seeing them go (yeah, I know people love him, but he hasnt impressed me) but I highly doubt the judges will let it happen.  I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some random couple who ends up in the B3. Hmmm, we’ll see what happens.

So You Think You Can Dance? Michael Jackson Tribute in the Works?

Posted by Kim on June 30th, 2009

sytycdlogo

I figured there would at least be a group dance or something of the sort dedicated to Michael Jackson on So You Think You Can Dance? this season, but according to Nigel Lythgoe’s twitter, they’re working on an entire episode based around his music!  Here are the specific tweets:

dizzyfeet At the same time as auditioning we’re trying to put together a major tribute to him Michael’s music works in every dance genre for the show

dizzyfeet Mia has chosen the song she likes, we’ve spoken to Wade. I’ve left messages for Paula. I’ve spoken to Shane. We have to make this happen!!?

dizzyfeet There is a problem clearing Michael’s music at the moment. We are trying to make contact with Sony to get clearance on an all Michael SYTYCD

dizzyfeet If we can make this ’special’ happen it is thanks to many of you “Tweeters” out there who all had the same idea. “Twitter-Power” is awesome!

So, it looks like they’re working on it but it isn’t exactly a “go” yet.  On some message boards I’m seeing a lot of people doubting this idea, saying the music won’t work for every style.  Seriously?  Apparently some people don’t know Michael’s catalogue very well, and they surely must not pay close attention to this show; if you can make “Poker Face” and “Girlfriend” work for latin, then I’m sure there’s a way to make MJ’s music work.

SYTYCD? S5: Top 18 Cuts

Posted by Kim on June 26th, 2009

Oh gosh, I hate that Pitbull song but that was some opening number!  When I heard Tabitha & Napoleon were choreographing with Dmitry Chaplin, I thought “whaaa?”, but that mix of hip hop and latin was pretty hot.  And Nigel also opened the show with a few great words about Michael Jackson and his influence on not just the music world but the dance world as well.

Michael Jackson Dies

Posted by Kim on June 26th, 2009

michaeljackson

Wow, what a crazy day today has been, first with Farrah Fawcett passing away this afternoon, and then Michael Jackson.  I’m still shocked that Michael gone.  Those of you who remember all my posts (especially the song suggestions) about AI’s Michael Jackson themed episode probably already know that I was always a fan of his music.  My parents were the ones who got me hooked on his music when I was younger.  And ask any musician from any genre who inspired them and he’ll certainly be on the list.    I feel sorry for his family, and his children especially.  But he will never be forgotten, that’s for sure.

My favorite MJ song…
